We heard about this upcoming voyage when we aboard earlier this summer, but now it’s happening. Seabourn Venture on Aug. 27 departed from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, on her first voyage through the famed Northwest Passage. This is also the very first time any Seabourn ship will sail the Northwest Passage. Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen was the first to navigate through the Northwest Passage in 1903–1906. Amundsen's Gjøa was the first vessel to transit the route. Today, 120 years after the first transit, Seabourn Venture will take her guests on an expedition through the passage. The ship will travel on a 21-day journey and arrive at Nome, Alaska, on Sept. 17, offering guests several notable experiences and visits to remote destinations throughout the voyage Seabourn Venture will visit Sisimiut, Greenland’s second-largest city with the best-preserved historic church in the country. It then sail on to Ilulissat, which in Greenlandic means “iceberg,” located at the terminus of the Jakobshavn Glacier, which calves into the sea. Then the ship will sail to Pond Inlet in Nunavut, Canada, where local Inuit residents will guide guests on a walk through town. Then it visits Croker Bay at Devon Island, the world’s largest uninhabited island in Baffin Bay off the coast of Nunavut. Seabourn Venture will spend nine days tracing the Northwest Passage, where the expedition team will deploy the kayaks, Zodiacs, and submarines for naturalist-led experiences set on a flexible schedule that’s guided by ice conditions. It will spend five days sailing along Canada’s Northwest and Yukon Territories via the Beaufort Sea, with the expedition team on the lookout for seabirds and marine mammals en route to Nome. Along the way the ship will feature a number of expedition experiences, from Zodiac outings and hiking to optional kayaking and submersible excursions. Launched in July 2022, Seabourn Venture was designed to cruise in diverse environments to PC6 Polar Class standards and is equipped with the most modern hardware and technology to extend its global employment and capabilities. The ship is a brand-new innovative design, created specifically for the ultra-luxury expedition traveler, and includes many features that have made Seabourn ships so successful. Along with crew providing every level of Seabourn’s renowned service, the ship is staffed with a 24-person expedition team whose role is to give guests the most from expeditions on land and at sea. Comprised of highly regarded wilderness experts, scientists, historians and naturalists, the team will regularly interact with guests, providing in-depth insights into the history, ecology and culture of the places they visit. Their valuable insights are offered both in formal presentations on a variety of topics and in more casual conversations over meals, on deck during scenic cruising or leisure experiences. Seabourn Venture stretches 558 feet, with close to 30,000 square feet of deck space. Indoor and outdoor guest areas offer nearly 270-degree views, while a 4K GSS Cineflex Camera mounted on the mast of the ship’s Constellation Lounge broadcasts imagery of natural wonders from up to five miles away. The ship is equipped with eight double kayaks and enough Zodiacs to transport every guest on expeditions at once, as well as two custom-built submarines, each with capacity for six and capable of exploring the natural wonders under the sea in comfort.
